What hosts are commonly affected by Gray mold?

Gray mold, caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea, primarily affects a variety of fruits and vegetables, notably strawberries and grapes. This pathogen thrives in humid conditions and can cause significant damage during wet weather or when crops are overly watered, leading to rot and decay of the plant tissues.

Strawberries are particularly susceptible, as the fungus can infect the flowers, leaves, and fruit, making management crucial in the post-harvest stage as well. Grapes are also highly affected, especially in the vineyard during late season as the fruit matures, where the disease can lead to a breakdown of berry integrity and reduced quality during wine production.

The other choices—potatoes and corn, cucumbers and beans, and lettuce and carrots—are less commonly associated with Gray mold. While other pathogens may target these crops, Botrytis cinerea is especially notorious for causing gray mold in strawberries and grapes, which is why this pair of hosts is recognized as the most affected by this specific fungal disease.
